LAHORE – Monday, June 26, is the first day of Eid Al Fitr 2017 as the crescent of Shawwal has been sighted in Pakistan, officials said.

“Shawwal’s crescent moon has been sighted in Lahore, which means Eid starts on Monday,” according to zonal moon sighting committee.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) had already predicted that Eid-ul-Fitr was most likely to fall on June 26.

The Muslim calendar is determined by Moon phases making each month last either 29 or 30 days. Islamic years span on average between 354 and 355 days.
