ISLAMABAD – Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif appeared before the Joint Investigation Team (JIT) on Thursday.

JIT summoned premiere in connection to an ongoing probe about his assets after the Panama Case verdict from the top court

This all started when Panama Papers were leaked last year in March from Panamanian law firm Mossack Fonseca documenting the offshore dealings of many of the world’s rich and powerful.

PM Nawaz’s three of the four children — his daughter and presumptive political heir Maryam, and his sons Hasan and Hussein — were implicated.

In April Pakistan’s Supreme Court said there was insufficient evidence to oust Sharif from power, but ordered the formation of a Joint Investigation Team (JIT) to probe the claims.

The JIT summoned Sharif last week to “appear and associate with the JIT and also bring all relevant record”.

The prime minister arrived Thursday with his younger brother Shahbaz Sharif, chief minister of Pakistan’s Punjab province, and other colleagues at the investigation team’s headquarters in Islamabad, waving to TV cameras before entering the building.

He appeared confident after around three hours questioning and vowed he would be cleared.

“I have accounted for every single penny. All details of my assets are already with all institutions including Supreme Court, despite that I have submitted to the JIT,” he said, reading a prepared statement to reporters.

“People should know, this investigation has no relation to corruption or embezzlement from the national exchequer, this is a matter of a family’s private and personal business.”

The JIT comprises anti-corruption officials, along with members of the powerful Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) agency and Military Intelligence.

At the heart of the case is the legitimacy of the funds used by the Sharif family to purchase several high-end London properties via offshore companies.
